Stewart J. Guss Founder

Stewart J. Guss

Since starting his firm in 1999, Stewart J. Guss has had the honor of representing clients from all over the world, helping them recover from even the most catastrophic injuries.

It all began with just one employee: himself. He made the coffee in the morning, sent all his own faxes, typed all his own briefs, and answered all his own calls. (Oh, and he cleaned the coffee pot at the end of the day too!)

Stewart’s father instilled in him a perspective he’s carried throughout his life and career: everyone matters, everyone is important, and everyone should be treated with respect.

Today, thanks to a strong belief in those values of compassion, respect, and approachability, the firm has grown to employ over 120 legal professionals in numerous offices across 4 states, with nationwide reach.

Stewart grew up in Clear Lake City in Greater Houston, where his father worked for NASA. After graduating from Clear Lake High School, Stewart went on to obtain his Bachelor’s Degree at the University of Texas at Austin. Following additional graduate study at the Red McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas, he earned his Juris Doctor Degree from the University of Houston Law Center.

Stewart is an active member of the Texas Trial Lawyers Association, as well as numerous other professional organizations. With over 20 years practicing personal injury law, Stewart’s professional accomplishments have been nationally recognized: The National Association of Distinguished Counsel ranked him as one of the top one percent of personal injury attorneys in the country in 2015. The National Trial Lawyers listed him as one of the top 100 trial lawyers in the nation in 2016. He’s been featured as one of the “Best Attorneys in America” by the prestigious Rue Ratings since 2015. Stewart has also been designated one of the Top Personal Injury Attorneys by Houstonia Magazine for 2013 – 2019, every year since it began publishing its rankings.

As an avid believer in the motto “pay it forward,” Stewart is an active philanthropist. He established — and funds — Houston’s Unsung Greats “HUG” Award, sponsors an annual college scholarship, and supports numerous charities, including Reach Unlimited and the MS150. Stewart is also a patron of the arts, underwriting both Stageworks Theater and the Houston Gilbert and Sullivan Society.

Stewart lives in Houston with his wife Kelli, their son Iain, their daughter Adrienne, and their three labradoodles. In his spare time, he enjoys cooking as well as biking through Northwest Harris County with his family.

Get to Know: Stewart J. Guss

Why did you get into personal injury law?  “I’m Jewish, so I was raised by a “Jewish mother.”  For those not familiar with the stereotype, they are ALWAYS overprotective (eat some soup, you’re too skinny, or put on a sweater, it’s cold, etc.) It has always been part of who I am to try and look out for others, to help others when they need help, and this area of the law gave me the perfect opportunity to do so.”

What does “client first” mean to you? “We spend absolutely every moment of every workday looking to protect the legal interests of our clients and move their cases forward.  More than that, a “client first” approach means ensuring we treat our clients the way we would like to be treated. We strive to promptly return all calls and emails, we go out of our way to explain —  and sometimes OVER explain — to our clients their legal rights and options.  Bottom line: we want to treat all of our clients as if we were representing our own family.”

Do you have any hidden talents or surprising hobbies? “Since I can’t sing, I can’t dance, I can’t draw or sculpt, the way I express myself creatively is as a cook and mixologist, and I take great pride in those skills!”

What did you think you were going to be when growing up? “A race car driving Rabbi.  No, really.”

What is your go-to comfort food? “Authentic Texas barbecue brisket.”

What is your favorite TV show or movie? “Favorite movie of all time: The Godfather.  Favorite television series of all time: Breaking Bad.”

What is your favorite thing to do on the weekends? “I usually catch up with the remainder of my work week while sitting in the kitchen, drinking coffee with Kelli and the pups.  After that, we will usually get in a workout, run some errands, and then always try to find time to relax outside, when possible.  Sunday mornings are for blues music in our house, and Sunday afternoons are for rest!”

If you could know more about one thing, what would it be? “Advanced cooking techniques – still working on it!”
