The Potential Dangers of Holiday Travel

For many of us, the holiday season means traveling to distant cities or states to visit family and friends. The Bureau of Travel Statistics reports that over 90 percent of holiday travel occurs in personal vehicles such as cars, and that the number of people traveling 50 miles or more increases significantly around the holiday season. When you combine heavy traffic with other dangers that are present during this time of year, the results can be catastrophic. In the unfortunate event that you or a loved one is involved in an accident while traveling this holiday season, you should consult with a personal injury attorney as soon as possible. Any losses you sustain in a car accident may be compensable in a personal injury lawsuit.  In addition to property damage to your vehicle, these losses can include medical bills, lost wages, physical pain and mental anguish, disability (even if temporary), and disfigurement (in the event of serious cuts or abrasions.) Therefore, it is extremely important to make sure you do everything possible to make sure your legal rights are protected.

While heavy traffic can be dangerous by itself, there are many other risks to motorists that increase during the holiday season. Below is some information about the most common, as well as some information on how you may avoid them.

  • Winter Weather Conditions – Many of us who live in Texas may be inexperienced when it comes to driving in wintry weather such as snow or ice. These conditions can have a detrimental effect on vehicle performance and visibility, increasing the risk of accidents. Make sure to check the weather along your route before leaving, and try and avoid driving through winter storms if possible. Additionally, get your vehicle checked out by a professional before departing on your trip.
  • Impaired Drivers – Holiday parties and drinking often go hand-in-hand. Statistics indicate that motor vehicle accidents involving impaired drivers increase around the holidays, putting you at risk even if you are not drinking. If you are attending a holiday party and plan on drinking, make sure you have a designated driver or have made other arrangements for transportation home. If you see a driver who you believe to be impaired, contact the appropriate authorities immediately.
  • Aggressive Driving – The holidays can be a very stressful time, and people often get frustrated with congested roads and running late.  Its odd how people can be in such a rush to participate in the joy of a holiday celebration that they drive like complete jerks to get there.  If you feel threatened by another driver, do not engage in any communication and pull over to a safe place.

If you are involved in an accident, make sure to call the police and have them investigate.  If need be, call 911 if anyone is injured.  Also, be sure to record as much information about the accident as possible. This can include taking pictures of the scene and any damage that occurred, as well as getting contact information from any witnesses to the incident. Make sure to undergo a thorough medical evaluation after an accident in order to make sure any injuries you have sustained are properly documented. Finally, contact an attorney before making any statements to any insurance companies, investigators, or other parties investigating the incident.
