Common Construction Site Accidents and How to Avoid Them

Construction sites are fraught with potential dangers to those both those who work at them and also to people who simply pass by. The presence of heavy machinery, power tools, unfinished structures, and construction materials can pose significant risks. According to data published by the Bureau for Labor Statistics, 721 people were involved in fatal construction site accidents in 2011 alone. Even when accidents do not result in fatalities, they can leave victims with serious injuries that can cause long-term medical complications. These medical problems may leave someone unable to work or to care for themselves, creating a significant need for financial support for victims and their families. Fortunately, Texas law allows people who are injured in construction accidents to recover through a personal injury lawsuit. Attorney Stewart Guss can help you recover for your injuries, and make sure that you and your family’s future is secure.

While construction accidents occur for a wide variety of reasons, some are clearly more common than others. Some of the more common kinds of injury-causing accidents are detailed below, as well as some information as to how to avoid them.

  • Falls – Falls from heights or scaffolding can result in very serious injuries. Some of the steps that can be taken to avoid falls include using sturdy scaffolding, elevated platforms, guardrail systems, covering holes in flooring, and using safety net or personal fall arrest systems.

  • Slips and Falls – These accidents occur often, and can be reduced by ensuring that stray tools and debris is picked up, wet surfaces clearly marked, using evening flooring, and by filling in any open holes in the ground. (Note: we actually handle a large number of slip and fall accident claims)

  • Electrical Injuries – In order to reduce the risk of electrical injuries, make sure to minimize the amount of exposed wiring at a construction site, and clearly mark places where there are such electrical hazards.

  • Falling debris, materials, or objects – Make sure that work crews are not positioned underneath places where there may be a risk for falling objects, such as directly underneath other crews.

By taking these steps, construction workers can reduce the risk that they or their co-workers will be involved in a construction site accident. In the unfortunate event that you or a loved one is involved in such an accident, you should be certain to consult with an attorney as soon as possible. Texas personal injury claims are extremely time-sensitive, and a delay could result in the forfeiture of your right to file a claim.
